Welcome to "Resource-Efficient Construction" at Dalarna University

My name is Alaa Khadra, and I am an Assistant Professor and the coordinator of this course. I look forward to welcoming you and exploring how life cycle approaches can support informed decisions in construction and renovation.

This bachelor-level course focuses on life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle costing (LCC). You will learn how to assess the environmental impacts and costs of buildings throughout their life cycle.

During the course, you will study:

  • Fundamental concepts and principles of LCA and LCC.

  • Defining the goal, scope, and boundaries of an assessment.

  • Collecting and analysing life cycle data.

  • Assessing environmental impacts and life cycle costs.

  • Interpreting results and critically discussing the strengths and limitations of these methods.

Through individual assignments, project work, and seminars, you will apply conventional methods and tools, compare alternatives, and discuss how your findings can inform decisions about buildings and materials. The course also introduces circularity, material reuse, and building preservation as complementary perspectives.

You will also meet Santiago Valencia Gonzalez, a Doctoral Student in Energy Engineering, who will join the course as a guest lecturer and be responsible for some of the course assignments.

I encourage you to ask questions, share your ideas, and participate actively in discussions with your teachers and fellow students. In this Canvas course room, you will find course materials, assignment instructions, and updates.

I look forward to working with you!
