Welcome to the course "Towards Sustainability and Resilience in Tourism and Hospitality 2" at Dalarna University
The lessons in this course will be taught at Campus Borlänge.
This course is intended primarily for students taking the Master’s Programme Sustainability and Tourism.
Students in this course will explore the multiple dimensions of resilience in tourism. The course begins by introducing resilience in socio-ecological systems, enabling students to understand destinations as complex systems that are interconnected with local, regional, and global systems. The governance of complex systems and its role in fostering resilience is also a key component of the course.
Resilience is further examined through the lens of destination vulnerability in times of crisis, with particular emphasis on the impacts of climate change on tourism systems.
As sustainability transformations require alternative epistemologies and collaborative approaches, students will be introduced to a range of methods and tools for addressing uncertainty and planning for resilient and sustainable destinations.
This course comprises of lectures and seminars. Lectures introduce the topic to the students and then students explore it and deepening their understanding with the reading of the literature before coming to a seminar to discuss it. At the end of the seminar, we recapitalising the main outcomes.
The course develops around three main topics:
- Resilience in complex socio-ecological systems
- Crisis, risks and vulnerability
- Transformative, collaborative methods for change
