Course Overview
This course covers how organisations can choose a data management platform suited for the type of data stored in their data tier. Topics include various data management systems, indexes and design patterns for performance optimisation, spatial data modelling, and modern platforms such as NoSQL and Neo4j. Teaching is based on lectures, laboratory work, and assignments.
Learning Outcomes
After completing this course you should be able to:
- Explain how different data management platforms are used to handle different types of data
- Explain how indexes can be used to optimise data retrieval from a data tier
- Explain how different types of cloud storage can realise a data management platform
- Use programming languages to create stored APIs in a data tier
- Use SQL to retrieve data from dimensional models
- Create an information model for spatial data connected to an infrastructure network
- Suggest a suitable data management platform for a specific situation with different types of data
