Welcome to Data Analysis for Solar Energy Systems at Dalarna University

Most of the lessons in this course will be taught at Campus Borlänge. Recorded material will sometimes be made available on our learning platform, and Samtal104 (zoom) will be used for digital meetings.


Welcome to Data Analysis for Solar Energy Systems (AEG2AK, 5 credits). It is intended primarily for students taking the Master's Programme in Solar Energy Engineering.
 

When you take this course, you will study the following:

  • Reading, structuring and writing measurement data from solar energy systems — irradiance, temperature, flow rate, voltage and current
  • Judging measurement data quality: what makes a reading wrong, how to find it, and what to do about it
  • Processing, analysing and visualising data with Python, and reporting what the numbers support

You will improve your skills in these areas:

  • Deciding whether data can be trusted before drawing conclusions from it
  • Building an analysis step by step and leaving a trace another person can follow
  • Writing and speaking about results so that every claim points back to a specific figure
  • Working in a small team on a project for a client with a real question


We hope you engage in inspiring, interesting and challenging discussions with your teachers and fellow students. As with all courses at Dalarna University, this course has a strong foundation in theory and research.
An important feature in the design of the course is that it connects theory with practice. You open a real measurement file. You look at it before you trust it. You find what is wrong with it, decide what to do, and say what you found and why it follows.

The course runs as a sequence of nine notebooks. The first five you work through individually, at your own pace. The last four you meet inside a group project, where you work in threes and each of you takes a different view of the same data. We view group work as an important resource: the project is where the analysis stops being an exercise and starts being an answer someone asked for.
