Course syllabus

Welcome to the course in Sustainable Business Strategy!

We will explore the ideas and methods/models of strategy and sustainability in lectures, workshops and seminars. The main course literature will be articles that relate strategy and climate change. There are a number of articles of both academic and more journalistic character. The ambition is to be as updated and relevant as possible. Sometimes ideas are old but still very relevant, and sometimes the relevance needs to be as updated as possible.

The course has been constructed in part around the book Fundamentals of Strategy that has come out in several different editions in recent years. A similar but more extensive strategy book is "Exploring Strategy". Both books include Richard Whittington among the authors. You may choose either of these books as the basis of your reading for the course. Importantly there are a number of articles that add sustainability aspects, mainly with a focus on climate issues.

We will  good referential material to properly grasp the concepts and models presented and worked on in lectures and workshops. 

The basic structure of the course will be lecture followed by two workshops. The first workshop will be groupwork that follows the steel industry and more specifically the local steel mill SSAB. I hope to organize a field trip during the course. The second workshop is very soon after the first (same day sometimes), and is the use of the concepts and models on a business of your choice (a list of possible businesses is provided). At the end of this second workshop, your work is handed in.

The examination of this course is the in two parts. The combination of the hand-ins (after all of the second workshops) is to be revised and improved. That is your individual project and worth 5 points (of 7.5)

There is also a written exam worth 2.5 points (of 7.5)
