Course syllabus

Welcome to the course 'Research Methods in Global Sexual, Reproductive Health' at Dalarna University!

Lectures and seminars in this course will take place on-line and often also at Campus Falun. Recorded material will be made available here at our learning platform, and Zoom will be used for digital meetings.

This course runs in parallel to the course Global Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, which you can find in a separate course room here at the learning platform. The course is a part of the Master’s Programme in Global Sexual and Reproductive Health. 

When you take this course, you will study research methods and ethics in the research process relevant to the field of global sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Learning objectives

• independently and systematically search for relevant scientific articles to identify research areas and formulate questions that are relevant to research in the field
• analyse the quality of studies conducted on the basis of both quantitative and qualitative methods
• apply advanced skills in the design of a scientific study, data generation, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative research
• argue for the use of ethical principles in various research situations

The course consists of four modules, covering quantitative and  qualitative research methods, literature review desings, research ethics and trustworthiness in research. There will be a mix of of individual and group assignments.  We apply a "flipped classroom" pedagocial model with the student's learning and own responsibility for the learning process in focus. This means - in general terms - that the place and focus of teacher-led lectures and student assignments are shifted. In practice, the students engage with and study the course content through recorded lectures and course literature. Joint class time, primarily seminars, takes place via digital meetings (Zoom) and often also on campus with in-depth exploration, presentations and reflections related to the subjects the students have studied on their own, i pairs or groups.
