Welcome to Portuguese: Basic Course I and II at Dalarna University
Course Content
The course consists of two modules:
1. Portuguese: Basic Course I, 15 Credits
This module focuses on building a basic vocabulary and an understanding of the Portuguese pronunciation system. Furthermore, grammar and language structure are analysed from a contrastive perspective, in relation to Swedish or English, to develop language proficiency. The texts in the module introduce the student to various aspects of Portuguese-speaking cultures.
2. Portuguese: Basic Course II, 15 Credits
The module focuses on deepening basic grammar studies to develop students’ language proficiency and on conducting contrastive analyses with Swedish or English. The module includes a variety of different exercises in listening comprehension and pronunciation. Students practise using basic vocabulary and improve their ability to interact in Portuguese on various topics both orally and in writing by reading and writing short texts. In addition, the course includes an introduction to Portuguese-speaking cultures and highlights various aspects of the relationships between Portugal, Brazil, and other parts of the Portuguese-speaking world in Africa and Asia.
Learning Outcomes
1. Portuguese: Basic Course I, 15 Credits
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
• communicate in Portuguese in everyday situations
• use basic vocabulary on familiar topics
• identify different diacritic signs and simple grammatical structures, and use them orally and in writing
• describe the content of and write simple texts on familiar topics
• discuss Portuguese language structure in a contrastive perspective in comparison with English or Swedish.
2. Portuguese: Basic Course II, 15 Credits
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
• communicate in Portuguese in familiar and certain specialised situations
• participate in a discussion in Portuguese on familiar topics
• identify and analyse grammatical structures and use them orally and in writing
• discuss and write simple coherent texts on familiar topics
• translate brief and simple texts to and from Portuguese
• describe, analyse and compare historical, cultural and linguistic aspects of current Portuguese-speaking societies around the world.
Preliminary Information
You are now in your course room. Until you register in your course, you will only be able to enter this room and log in as a guest. As a guest, you can access certain information about your course and your first weeks of study. Registration to the course opens on week 34.
Study Format
Your course will be taught, as usual, entirely online (net-based).
Be Ready to Start your Studies
Throughout your studies, you will use Canvas, which is the name of this learning platform. In each room, you will find teaching material and other information about that specific course. You will also find your schedule in your course room and a list of the course literature that you will be using during the semester. After you register in your course, you will have full access to our learning platform Canvas.
Start of the Course
The course will start on week 36, with a first Introductory Session for each seminar group. This semester there are two different seminar groups, each with a specific schedule. Group selection is done by each registered student directly in the course room on Canvas. Make sure to check Announcements for updated information and messages. The schedule for each seminar group is as follows:
• GROUP 1: Mondays & Thursdays, 15:30-17:30
• GROUP 2: Tuesdays & Fridays, 09:00-11:00
