Welcome to "Project Work in Tourism Studies" at Dalarna University

Welcome to the "Project Work in Tourism Studies". It is intended for students taking the Master’s Programme in Sustainability and Tourism.

This course enables students to develop skills and knowledge to:

  • identify and analyse real-world issues in tourism, hospitality or leisure that organisations and destinations are facing.
  • Transferable skills of problem solving, critical analysis, reflectivity
  • Communication with companies, practitioners and organisations in the field of tourism
  • Transfer of knowledge to/from tourism practitioners

More specifically:

  • Through critical analysis of the issue and in close collaboration with the organisation and the academic mentor, students develop transferable skills, and are able to connect existing knowledge in the field of studies to the development and discussion of feasible solutions.
  • With an iterative process of critical analysis, reflection, and collaboration with the organisation, the course builds a link between the theory and the practice of tourism.
  • Students are given a high degree of freedom to interact with stakeholders to identify specific issues to work with, knowledge sources, and the means to address them.
  • The project is self-directed but supported through the guidance of both Dalarna University staff and a responsible person within the chosen organisation.
  • Students reflect on the theoretical underpinnings and sources of knowledge as well as on its links to sustainability debates and tourism as a field of knowledge and practice.

Seminars are taught at Campus Borlänge.

The course includes a number of study visits to the case study: 2-3 planned visits for the whole group and potentially more that the students will organise themselves (collect data, information, informal meetings, etc).

We hope you engage in inspiring, interesting, and challenging discussions with your teachers and fellow students. As with all courses at Dalarna University, this course has a strong foundation in theory and research and their linking to the practice of tourism.

An important feature in the design of the course is that it connects theory with practice.

Although there are seminars intended to fulfill the academic requirements of the course, of equal importance is the communication, collaboration, and outputs for the specific company/organisation.

Students are expected to show high degree of professionalism, creativity, curiosity, and reflectivity to meet the needs of the company in an informative and knowledgeable way.

Seminars give the opportunity for reflection and feedback but alone do not meet the needs of the project to be delivered to the company/organisation. Students need to be in close communication with their contact person there to ensure the relevance and quality of the delivered outputs.
