Course syllabus
Welcome to the course Energy and Urban Planning.
The course Energy and Urban Planning is primarily intended for students in the Master’s Programme in Energy-Efficient Built Environment, but it is also open to other students as a freestanding course.
Most learning activities will take place at Campus Borlänge and online via Zoom. On 5–6 February, a mandatory examining seminar will be held as part of a workshop on campus in Borlänge.
The course focuses on how climate and energy considerations can be integrated into the planning of the built environment. Students will study large-scale infrastructure systems in relation to urban areas and examine their energy use and climate impacts through activity-based learning, both individually and in interdisciplinary teams. Throughout the course, students will analyse existing or planned urban neighbourhoods and develop proposals that address current energy and climate challenges.
Upon completion of the course, students shall be able to:
- obtain, analyze and synthesize information from multiple sources so as to describe the energy consumption of a town;
- show a basic understanding of infrastructure systems;
- demonstrate, both orally and in writing, an understanding of the climate and energy impacts of various infrastructure systems solutions;
- analyze and critically evaluate existing or planned neighbourhoods from the perspective of the environment and energy;
- give suggestions and recommendations for how neighbourhoods should be developed so as to be more sustainable;
- work in international and/or multi professional teams;
- communicate their knowledge, analyses and proposals in both oral and written form.
