Course syllabus
Welcome to "Social Science Methods III" at Dalarna University
Welcome to this course on Social Science Methods in Political Science. In the course, different types of comparative methods and their main conduct, assumptions, advantages, and problems are scrutinized. The course also deals with research design, statistical analyses, and how the method is chosen in relation to a research question. The course problematizes the relation between the quantitative and qualitative methodological traditions and deals with research ethical considerations.
The course is divided into two main parts: the first part offers an introduction to review methods, to the theory of science, and to the three main types of methods. These include quantitative, comparative, and qualitative methods. Each of these three parts introduces both the analytical method and related methods of data collection. Together with these five subparts, we offer a selection of Q&As, workshops, and seminars to offer opportunities for active participation and queries. The second part of the course consists of three selected methods for deepening and further practice. Each student selects one and follows the separate schedule for that method (see the module). Selection of methods for deepened studies is made during week 9.
After completing this course, students should be able to:
- independently conduct and present different forms of comparative methods and
- problematize and critically reflect on different comparative research methods and
- independently identify and formulate scientific problems and choose a suitable research
- handle research ethical aspects and considerations.
We hope that the course will develop and deepen your understanding of the methods you encounter in published research pieces, as well as your own ability to select and use methods as part of your upcoming master's thesis!
Here you can find a preliminary schedule for the course.
