Welcome to the Språkdidaktik module within English l for teacher education students at Dalarna University!

This course is taught online, via Zoom. For some parts, recorded material will be offered via this learning platform.

1. GEN379 - English I for teacher students comprises four courses: Introduction to Academic English (GEN35D), The Structure of Modern English (GEN2VF), English Literature (GEN379 - English Literature), and English Language Learning and Teaching (GEN379 - Språkdidaktik). All four courses have separate Canvas rooms.

2. Make sure that you have access to all four rooms. Read the information on the startpage, read the course syllabus, read the literature list, and look through the timetable for your seminars. Each course room will have a timetable.

3. Follow instructions in each course room and sign up for your seminar groups (via People/Personer).

4. If you are taking the course full-time (as a teacher program student), you will study all four courses.

5. If you applied for the course as an elective (fristående), you study all or whichever course module or modules you wish. 

Språkdidaktik l module within GEN379 - English l for teacher education students is offered as:

    • A free-standing course.
    • Part of English for teacher programme students.

The course aims to introduce students to and prepare them for their future professional role as an English teacher in the later years of secondary school or in upper secondary school. This involves students acquiring basic subject theoretical and subject didactic knowledge.

We hope you engage in inspiring, interesting, and challenging discussions with your teachers and fellow students. As with all courses at Dalarna University, this course has a strong foundation in theory and research.

On completion of the module, you will be able to:

  • discuss how the status of foreign languages in school and society has developed historically and is debated today
  • explain central language learning theories and discuss their relevance for language teaching
  • discuss school governing documents with particular focus on course and subject syllabi for English
  • in Swedish, discuss and reflect on language didactic issues that relate to the selection of teaching materials and work methods in relation to the target group and school governing documents.
