Course syllabus
Welcome to "Health Care System Research in Low-, Middle- and High-Income Settings" at Dalarna University
The lessons in this course will be taught at Campus Falun and online. Recorded and reading material will be available on our learning platform, and Zoom will be used for digital meetings. After taking the ASR24 X course "Quality Improvements in Healthcare Settings", you might have realized how important leadership, management, and teamwork are within healthcare systems for equal access to healthcare services in a population. You will use the knowledge gained from ASR24X and the leadership and management course (ASR26U) when you take this course. In this course, you will focus on healthcare system research in low-, middle- and high-income settings to improve the quality of the healthcare system using scientific methods. This means knowledge gained from the full program, methodological, and topic-focused courses (ASR24V, ASE24W, ASR25V) will be useful in this course, making a plan (Concept Note) for evaluating evidence-based interventions in health care services for equal access to all individuals.
Module 1 focuses on Applying and adapting evidence-based knowledge about global sexual and reproductive health that is important for healthcare providers and patients. In Module 2 you will focus on evaluating interventions within health care settings. In Module 3 you will identify multidisciplinary approaches to manage complex challenges within health care systems. An Individual Assignment will focus on developing a concept note for evaluating activities incorporated in a UN Annual Workplan (AWP), on equal rights in SRPH within healthcare settings. You will in Module 4 present your Concept Note with a PowerPoint. In particular, the examples and research activities are of interest in the presentation in class. We flipped the classroom and hope you enjoy the discussions with your teachers and fellow students.
The scenario for the individual assignment is as follows:
“After graduation from the master’s program, you have a short-term position as a reproductive health specialist at a UN country office. In Terms of References (ToR), you will evaluate UN-funded activities. The evidence-based knowledge about sexual, reproductive, and perinatal health (SRPH) has been an area for improvement as it is important for equal rights for health care providers and patients within health care settings. You remind yourself of the course (ASR25T) and your understanding of multidisciplinary strategies and methods for practical implementation science. You remind yourself of what you learned about health economics and how to develop a concept note per the UN's internal processes. After performing the scientific evaluation report the results of your evaluation will in turn be reported to the donors.”
