GIK2Q3 Applied Big Data and Cloud Computing

Master large-scale data processing and cloud deployment through practical application

Welcome to the Course!

In this course, we focus on how large-scale data is stored, processed, analysed, and deployed using modern cloud platforms and distributed computing tools. You will learn how technologies like Apache Spark, Dask, and cloud computing environments are used to solve real data problems at scale. We combine theory, hands-on labs, and collaborative project work. Most sessions are held on Campus Borlänge with additional digital components made available in Canvas and Zoom.

What You'll Learn

Distributed Data Systems

Understand how distributed data systems work: from MapReduce concepts to Spark

Large-Scale Processing

Process and analyse large datasets using Spark and Dask in JupyterLab

Cloud Platforms

Explore foundational principles that apply across major cloud providers and open-source ecosystems.

Scalable Pipelines

Design data pipelines for collection, transformation, analysis, and reporting

Team Collaboration

Work in collaborative data/ML teams using version control and modern development workflows

Critical Evaluation

Evaluate performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency of big data solutions

Course Approach

The course is intentionally practical. We do not only "talk about" architectures — we run them.

You will work with real datasets, deploy real code, and explain real trade-offs: speed, cost, scalability, and reliability. We expect you to participate actively in discussions, presentations, and project work. Group work is a key resource in this course and reflects how data teams operate in practice.
