Welcome to Methodology of Training and Competition at Dalarna University

Welcome to the course in training and competition methodology for Climbing, Judo and Powerlifting coaches.

The course structure emphasises interactive, on-line workshop-based learning. You’ll engage with peers in both mixed-sport and sport-specific groups—sometimes to challenge your perspective, sometimes to go deep into sport-specific detail. Pre-recorded lectures and pre-workshop homework will be available here in Canvas and we will meet via Zoom for the workshops. As with all courses at Dalarna University, this course has a strong foundation in theory and research.

The assignments are designed to help you think critically about planning beyond the textbook. You’ll be asked to reflect on your planning mindset, understand how to apply training principles and relevant periodisation concepts, and consider how to coach an evolving plan in a dynamic real-world context. Active engagement is essential—what you put in is what you’ll get out. If you are unable to attend the workshops, we will record what is possible and post it here in Canvas - note that breakout room discussions aren't able to be recorded so it will be limited to the multi-sport discussions.

SCHEDULE: Under the 'Modules' tab you can find a master schedule for the course. Any updates will be announced through the Announcements section.

TEXTS: Course literature includes an English-language textbook  (one optional Swedish-language reference is included for everyone in the document 'additional useful books 2025' under the Modules menu). Most readings are accessible as e-books via the university library or digital audio/e-book platforms. Other titles are commonly available—please check availability before buying. Additional scientific readings will be distributed throughout the course. More details about the texts and textbooks will be shared during the course introduction.
