Welcome to GPR279 Contemporary Brazil: Literature and Society at Dalarna University!

This course starts in week 36.

The seminars in this course will be taught entirely online (net-based) and English is the language of instruction.

Be Ready to Start your studies

Throughout your studies, you will use this platform for information and material and Zoom will be used for our digital seminars.

This course is offered to students who are non-specialists and specialist in Portuguese. If you study the Portuguese I (course package) this is made up of four courses, and every course has its own course room. In each room, you will find teaching material and other information about that specific course.

For this course you will find the course schedule (available 2 weeks before the course start) and a list of the books that you should buy before your course starts (see below). These you can buy at a book supplier.

When you take this course, you will study the following:

Works of fiction and non-fiction, film adaptations and other contemporary material that sheds light on developments in Brazilian society from the late 1800s until the present day. Focus is on the close study of a selection of representative works of fiction whose content relates to important historical and socio-political events, such as the abolition of slavery, the New
Republic, dictatorship, democracy and migration. In the course, developments in society in relation to equality and sustainability are also discussed.

You will improve your skills in these areas:

Conduct literary analyses that problematize literary content in relation to their historical and socio-cultural context. Explain the political and socio-economic events that have shaped the development of Brazilian society from the late 1800s until the present day. Reflect upon the development of Brazilian society from a global perspective,
and analyse equality and sustainability aspects.
