Course syllabus
Welcome to Introduction to Tourism Studies at Dalarna University!
This introductory course examines what makes tourism possible and considers how tourism operates. It looks at the different levels of tourism: from tourist to business to destinaton to national and global tourism systems. The course considers the role tourism plays in the economies and societes of many countries and provides an overview of the principles, concepts, practices, and philosophies behind the study of tourism. Using real world Nordic and global examples, this course sets out to give students an overview of the industry and build up a level of knowledge about the tourism industry. The course includes investigations into the tourism system, its actors and its importance to society as well as discussing issues of sustainability, marketing, and the challenges that many destinations are currently facing.
This is an on-line course. The course is set up to allow students to participate at their own pace. This means that most of the learning is self-directed and students will have to ensure they make time to undertake the activities and assessments. Students: Please ensure that you regularly check your email and Canvas for any updates about the course, available learning material, assessments and online sessions.
