Welcome to "Introduction to Academic English" at Dalarna University
This course is taught online, via Zoom. For some parts, recorded material will be offered via this learning platform.
Introduction to Academic English is offered as:
- A free-standing course.
- Part of English I.
- Part of English I for teacher students.
The course provides an introduction to academic communication in English in different academic disciplines, with a special focus on linguistics and literary studies, including didactics. It focuses on common genres of academic writing and speaking, and highlights typical features of those genres with respect to both linguistic forms and rhetorical functions.
At the end of the course, you will be able to:
- Analyse the distinguishing features of different types of academic texts in English studies, particularly in linguistics and literary studies, as well as didactics.
- Explain key differences and similarities regarding the discursive and rhetorical strategies typical of different specialisations in English studies.
- Produce a selection of common oral and written academic texts, while keeping with the conventions of academic English.
- Review the work of other students as well as your own work according to the conventions of academic English.
We hope you engage in inspiring, interesting, and challenging discussions with your fellow students and teachers. Like all teaching at Dalarna University, this course builds on a solid theoretical and research foundation.
Two important aspects of the design of this course are:
- Progression: We will begin with the basic aspects of academic English (e.g., punctuation, basic referencing) and, gradually, we will explore more complex aspects (e.g., synthesising and responding to secondary sources).
- Attendance and participation: Attending lessons (lectures, seminars and workshops) and participating in all course activities are crucial ways to develop your skills in this course.
SCHEDULE: Please open this file to see the preliminary schedule for the course (please note that a third seminar group will be added soon). NB: We try not to make changes to the schedule, but sometimes it is unavoidable, e.g., in case on illness. If changes are made, these will be announced via announcements and via email.
SEMINAR GROUPS: Please check this document to find out which group you have been assigned. If you made a request before 24 January at 12.00h and you did not get the group you requested, please contact Miguel (mgy@du.se) as soon as you notice this, as it may be a clerical error.
