Welcome to the Research Design, Science Theory and Method course

Welcome to the course Research Design, Science Theory and Method (FÖ3043)!

This course is designed to prepare students for conducting research in business administration and management. It provides guidance on epistemologies, the research design process (including both qualitative and quantitative approaches), and various methods of data analysis. By the end of the course, students are expected to formulate a research proposal that demonstrates a clear understanding of, and a justified choice of, theories and research methods relevant to their research aims.

The course runs from weeks 04 to 13 on campus in Borlänge. It is a full-time course (100% rate of study), meaning you are expected to dedicate approximately 40 hours per week to your studies.

Content of the Course

In the first part of the course, students learn about various research approaches, research philosophies, and their connection to research strategies, as well as research ethics. Additionally, students are guided through the research process, including research problem formulation, the selection and design of appropriate research methodologies, and different methods of data analysis.

The course concludes with the preparation of research proposals for a Master’s Thesis in Business Administration and Management. This demonstrates students’ ability to independently identify and formulate a research problem, as well as plan and execute research using appropriate methods within predetermined time frames.

The course is structured into four parts:

  • Part 1: Research design and research processes (Weeks 4–7)

  • Part 2: Research problem formulation (Continuously up to Week 8)

  • Part 3: Qualitative or quantitative methods of data analysis (Weeks 9–11)

  • Part 4: Research proposal (Weeks 9–13)
