Course syllabus
Welcome to "JP1050, Japanese I: Basic Language Proficiency (100%) " at Dalarna University
This course is the first half of the Japanese I course. It is intended primarily for beginner-level students who have never studied Japanese language or have studied it very little.
In this course you will work with both the spoken and the written language. You will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing through weekly lessons and assignments. During the seminars, you will learn basic greetings, expressions and grammars, and practice using them freely in different situations. You will also learn the two phonetic scripts, Hiragana and Katakana, and later Kanji (Chinese characters).
Forms of study
You will have seminars about twice a week. Students are expected to study materials beforehand and be ready to actively attend the seminars. The seminar will be carried out in small groups so that the students will get many opportunities to use the language. You will also work in groups with the other students outside class to get more speaking practice.
There is no physical meeting on campus, but the course requires your active participation in the web-based seminars via Zoom. A good Internet connection, functional headset and web camera are required for the seminars. We recommend to use a cable (not wireless) connection. Tablets and smart phones are not recommended as a tool to attend lessons since you may have problem to see materials and attend seminars actively in Zoom. You are also going need to print out worksheets and submit them in a digital format (PDF).
Examination
The grade of this course is determined based on regular assignments, online quizzes, group work, and active participation in class. There will be a Kana test in the middle of the course and a final examination at the end of the course.
To pass the course, you are expected to:
- participate actively in class (80% attendance is required)
- do all the assignments and pass them
- take part in all group work
- pass the Kana test and the final examination
