Course syllabus
Welcome to "Scholarly Writing in Literary Theory and Criticism" at Dalarna University
This course will be taught entirely online, with a combination of real-time online workshops and set assignments. Real-time online workshops are based on group discussions and on the students' own work in preparation for the final assignment. Some secondary material will sometimes be made available on our learning platform, and Zoom will be used for digital meetings.
Workshops are held early in the afternoon (normally 13.00-14.30), but the days may vary from workshop to workshop. The course starts in week 46 with the Introduction to be held on Wednesday, 13 November (13.00-15.00). A provisional course schedule is available in Modules. The Zoom room link is to be found in the course information module and here: https://du-se.zoom.us/j/64495905899
Reading (e.g.: articles, extracts, etc.) and further course material will be made available on Canvas in the weeks before the course officially begins.
This course is intended primarily for students taking the One-Year Master’s Programme in English with Specialisation in Literature in English.
The overall aim of the course is to prepare students to write a degree thesis in literature at the graduate level. On completion of the course students will be able to:
- reflect on and practice, both in writing and orally, important aspects of the literary research process
- reflect on the implications of methodological and theoretical perspectives
- identify and reflect on different types of scholarly writing in literary theory and criticism, and the strategies of argumentation that they employ
- analyse, evaluate and problematise the scholarly work of others
- communicate and argue, both in writing and orally, for their own interpretations of literary, critical and theoretical texts in clear, correct and appropriate academic English.
