Welcome to "European Unionen: Institutions and Politics" at Dalarna University
The European Union (EU) is a unique project. It is neither a traditional international organisation nor a sovereign state. Created in the aftermath of the Second World War as a limited economic cooperation between six European countries around coal- and steel production, it has gradually developed into a full-scale economic and political union with 27 (after Brexit) member states, supra-national decision-making, and a common currency. It has no historic precedent and continues to develop. Indeed, the constant integration process of the EU has been seen as a condition for its existence.
In the same way, a course about the EU is also unique. As the study object – the EU – is “sui generis” (a class by itself) the outline and content of the course is naturally different from other courses in International Relations or Comparative Politics. This course must deal with the EU as combination of a political system with institutions and regulations and a highly institutionalised international cooperation. The course also includes themes as the historical background of the EU, integration theories, enlargement processes, legitimacy problems and current challenges of the union.
We hope that this course will provide you with a good introduction to how the EU functions and a solid ground to discuss its development with a critical eye. The course is entirely web-based and the language of instruction is English.
The Course Introduction takes place Wednesday 13 November 13:00-14:00 at the following Zoom-link https://du-se.zoom.us/j/61240084901. The same link will be used for all the seminars.
