Welcome to Politics of Transnational Integration and National Fragmentation (ASK22G)
This course deals with the interplay between contradicting processes: Firstly, the global trend of globalisation, which ties states closer to each other and weaken state borders and secondly independence movements within states, which attempts at creating new borders. This theme shares some common questions:
Under which circumstances can a region declare independence from a state?
What is the difference between a nation and other societal groupings? What is the meaning of sovereignty and why is it so important for groups of people?
What role does the international society (or the transnational regional cooperation) play in this aspect?
During this course we will provide a historical and theoretical framework that will hopefully help you understand and comprehend these issues.
The learning outcomes are as follows:
- Demonstrate in depth theoretical and empirical knowledge about processes of integration and disintegration at the regional and national levels, which also involves applying and problematizing central concepts such as nation state, secession, nationalism and regional cooperation.
- Demonstrate the ability to independently provide an overview of the research field as well as identifying and critically reflect on methods that dominate the research field.
- Independently formulate a research problem within the research field and argue for a method that is appropriate for the problem.
Our goal is that you as a student will attain a broad understanding of these issues and that you will recognise that these issues can be discussed from several philosophical, political and legal points of view.
