Welcome to The Structure of Modern English at Dalarna University!

Please read everything below very carefully.

This course is taught online, via Zoom and Canvas. The date of the course introduction is 5 September, 8.30-10.00.

Further below you will find the Zoom link for the introduction and more information regarding the course schedule. There is, however, other information that you need to read first.

Is it OK if I am reading this on my smartphone?

No. Please do not access Canvas through a smartphone. It is possible, but it is not convenient, and it can make things confusing and difficult. Always use your laptop/desktop to access Canvas, Zoom or any other online learning tools. More generally, you should not do any of your course work on a smartphone. Use your laptop/desktop instead.

How many modules does this course have?

The answer depends on what exactly you are registered on. The Structure of Modern English is offered as:

    • A free-standing 12-credit course (GEN2VF).
    • Part of the 30-credit English I course package (GEN37A).
    • Part of the 30-credit course Engelska 1 med didaktisk inriktning (GEN379).

If you are taking The Structure of Modern English as a free-standing course or as part of the English 1 package (GEN37A), then for you the course has three modules:

    1. Grammar (7.5 credits)
    2. Phonetics (1.5 credits)
    3. Exploring Language (3 credits)

If you are taking The Structure of Modern English as part of Engelska 1 med didaktisk inriktning, then for you the course only has two modules:

    1. Grammar (7.5 credits)
    2. Phonetics (1.5 credits)

Where do I find the course schedule?

Click here to download the course schedule as a PDF file.

Click here to download the course schedule as an Excel file.

The Excel version of the schedule requires Office. If you do not have Office on your computer, you can use the PDF version for now. However, we strongly recommend that you start using your student access to Office right away. During the term, you will need it for your assignments. To access Office, please click here (Swedish) or here (English).

How do I make sense of the course schedule?

The schedule might look a bit overwhelming at first. To make things easier for yourself, please do the following step by step:

    1. Save the schedule on your computer. Open it. Read the text in the text boxes carefully.
    2. Note that there are 3 Grammar groups, 2 Phonetics groups, and 2 Exploring Language groups.
    3. Choose one Grammar group and delete the other two Grammar groups from the Excel.
    4. Choose one Phonetics group and delete the other Phonetics group from the Excel.
    5. Choose one Exploring Language group and delete the other two groups from the Excel. (If you are a student of Engelska 1 med didaktisk inriktning, delete all of the Exploring Language groups. You will not be doing this module.)

You will be able to sign up for the groups that you have chosen in this Canvas room. If you are doing the 30-credit English 1 package or Engelska 1 med didaktisk inriktning, please make sure that your choice of groups for this course does not clash with your seminar times in your other courses.
