Welcome to The Structure of Modern English at Dalarna University!
This course is taught on campus in Falun. Some of the seminars later in the course will be online, on Zoom. The date of the course introduction and the first seminar is 5 September, 8.30-12.00.
Below you can find more information regarding the course schedule. There is, however, other information that you need to read first.
Is it OK if I am reading this on my smartphone?
No. Please do not access Canvas through a smartphone. It is possible, but it is not convenient, and it can make things confusing and difficult. Always use your laptop/desktop to access Canvas, Zoom or any other online learning tools. More generally, you should not do any of your course work on a smartphone. Use your laptop/desktop instead.
How many modules does the course have?
The Structure of Modern English has three modules:
- Grammar (7.5 credits)
- Phonetics (1.5 credits)
- Exploring Language (3 credits)
You will receive a grade for each module as well as an overall grade for the course.

Note that the schedule is an Excel document. It requires Office. If you do not have Office on your computer, use your student access to Office. To access Office, please click here (Swedish) or here (English). During the term, you will need Office for your assignments.
Where do I go during the first week of classes?
The Structure of Modern English is part of English 1. On 4 September, 13.00-14.00, there is a general introduction to English 1. It is not compulsory, but it can be very helpful if you have not studied with us before. The room is E151, Falun campus.
On 4 September, 16.00-17.00, there is also a lecture on plagiarism. It is compulsory. The room is E151.
The first session of The Structure of Modern English is on 5 September, 8.30-12.00. It is compulsory. We start in room E151 and then, after a break, move to a different room.
