Welcome to Dynamics of African Societies AS3022/AS 2005!

Welcome to African Studies with classes both on the graduate- (AS3000) and the undergraduate- (AS2000) levels and both on campus (in English) and online (på svenska)!

The autumn semester courses are:

  • Dynamics of African Societies (12 credits, AS3022 and AS2005, runs late August to mid-January) this year for the first time with parallel teaching in English on Campus in Falun and in Swedish online on zoom.
  • Religion and Politics (9 credits, AS3023 and AS2006, late August to mid-October) this year for the first time with parallel teaching in English on Campus in Falun and in Swedish online on zoom.
  • Education and Change (8 credits, AS3021 and AS2004, mid-October to mid-January).

 

  • Graduate students also take the Developing the Research Proposal-course (1 credit, AS3024, part of Dynamics, all autumn semester).

 

English medium campus classes AS3000 and AS2000-levels general introduction, distribution of schedules, course handbooks, etc.: Monday, September 2, at 13-14.30 in room A130 on campus in Falun.

Swedish medium online class AS2000-level general introduction, presentation of schedules, course handbooks, etc.: Monday, September 2, at 15.00-16.30 on zoom https://du-se.zoom.us/j/63147964187.  

 

  • Course supervisor for Dynamics-, Religion and Politics- and Developing the research proposal-courses is Lars Berge (labe@du.se), on campus in Falun and online/mail from mid-August.
  • Course supervisor for Education and Change courses is Nadezda Lebedeva (nle@du.se). The E&C-courses don’t start until mid-October but she will be on campus from late August and onwards.

 

After registration you will by mid- to late August have full access to schedules, reading lists, course handbooks, articles to read for seminars and methodology workshops, etc.

All course information on Dynamics and Religion and Politics courses will be uploaded on the Canvas beginning with mid-August.

 

For students who already now wish to begin reading books to be discussed early in the semester, the following can be mentioned:  

  • Fanon, Frantz (1961), The Wretched of the Earth, London: Penguin Books, (255 p.) (available in Swedish translation: Jordens fördömda
  • Iliffe, John (1995), Africans: A History of a Continent. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, (323 p.) (Can be found in second-hand bookshops: Afrika: historien om en kontinent). 
  • Rodney, Walter (1974), How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Washington DC: Howard University Press (316 p.) (optional for under graduate students)
