Welcome to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) 2: Spatial Analysis at Dalarna University

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is often defined as a system that enables the collection, management, analysis, and visualization of information that can be tied to a geographic location. Nowadays, GIS is used in many different application areas. Urban planning, crisis management, or commercial services are just a few of them.

The main focus of this course is combine spatial and non-spatial data and to analyze the data. The results of the analysis will be presented in maps and in tables. Maps are a common way to present results of a spatial analysis and therefore different techniques for visualization will be discussed in the course.

Schedule: 

There are two compulsory seminars in the course in this course, those are held on Zoom.  The Zoom-meetings are included in TimeEdit. During the course there will be offered times to meet with the teachers online, to discuss your progress or questions.

Start your work: 

The course is structured into three seperate modules.

The first module starts week 1 in the course, with a recorded introduction to the course and introduction to the Assignment 1. You work with the Assigment 1 also in the week 2 and week 3 of the course. This first module ends week 3 with the first seminar where students present the result of Assignment 1. If you have questions related to Assignment 1, contact Daniel (dbr@du.se). 

The second module starts week 4 when the Assignment 2 is introduced, in week 5 there is schedule second seminar, where results  of Assignment 2 are presented. If you have questions related to Assignment 2, contact Daniel (dbr@du.se). 

The last module starts week 6 of the course and run to the week 10 of the course. In the third module, there is not schedule any seminar. Assignmetn 3 is submitted in the end of week 10 of the course. In this module is planned Christmass break. If you have questions related to Assignment 3, contact Zuzana (zma@du.se).
