Welcome to "Managing and Interpreting Cultural and Natural Heritage Sites AKG27R" at Dalarna University

Our focus in this course is to explore the complexities of heritage - both natural and cultural. Whilst we look at how these are managed a key part of the course is to challenge our understandings of heritage as a phenomenon; how it is socially constructed (even nature as an 'idea' is socially constructed) and the ways in which we as social actors interpret the natural and cultural worlds. Many of you will have been reading recent articles in newspapers, or may have seen news feeds on social media about the rise in resistance to tourism by host communities in many heritage destinations. Throughout this course we will seek to critique the role of heritage, both as consumers and producers, in destination attractiveness as well as the tensions inherent in ensuring both the sustainability of the heritage 'product' whilst developing new and innovative heritage related experiences. A central motif here will be developing an understanding of heritage as living and dynamic rather than 'dead' and necessarily stuck in the past.
