Welcome to "Sustainable Destination Development" at Dalarna University

Welcome to " Sustainable Destination Development ". It is intended primarily for students taking the Master’s Programme in Tourism Destination Development. We welcome also exchange students.

Course Content

This course aims at exposing the students at the complexity of tourism development in a variety of settings and developmental stages. Tourism is presented as a developmental choice with impacts on the local and global natural and socio-economic environment.  Sustainable tourism is examined from several perspectives and students are introduced in the rhetoric of sustainable tourism development. They explore various case studies using multiple theoretical lenses and cutting edge research to inform their understating of tourism reality at different scales and contexts.

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Conduct analytic work on the field of sustainable tourism development
  • Critically evaluate tourism development and its planning from a sustainability perspective in an academic written form
  • Understand sustainable tourism development as approached in a variety of cases

We hope you engage in inspiring, interesting, and challenging discussions with your teachers and fellow students. An important feature in the design of the course is that it connects theory with practice. You will use a variety of case studies to analyse, understand and explain using the course literature. The literature used in this course is academic research and thus you will have the opportunity to read cutting-edge research and incorporate it in your own learning and understanding of destination development.

We view group work as an important resource. This was evident by the feedback of previous participants of the course, who highlighted the value of group work and group discussions. You can expect a variety of group work, peer discussions and peer feedback and an integral part of the course together in-depth individual written essay.
