Course syllabus
Welcome to "Portuguese: Language in Society - Theoretical Perspectives" at Dalarna University
All the lessons in this course will be taught online. Recorded and written material will sometimes be made available on our learning platform, and Zoom will be used for digital meetings.
When you take this course, you will study the roles language and discourses play in daily life and in society. The course will introduce theoretical perspectives and notions that can be used to understand the dynamics of language in social life, across different spaces and contexts, foregrounding Portuguese-speaking contexts globally. The course deals with theoretical perspectives on the relationship between language, linguistic forms, attitudes, identities and social position. We will discuss language ideologies, language policies, discourses, identities and belonging, language and coloniality. The literature will also provide insights on the emergence of the field of sociolinguistics.
