Welcome to "Japanese IV Introduction to Translation (GJP23Z)" at Dalarna University

This course is offered online, via the Canvas learning platform and Zoom seminars (the link to the zoom room is in the course guideline module).

In this course, you will practice the basic principles of translation theory, such as concept of equivalence, various types of translation problems and translation strategies to solve them. You also practice various procedure of translation. It includes documentation (searching necessary information, and judging the reliability of possible information sources), translating different types of documents paying attention to their different styles and registers, considering the target audience and the purpose of translation. 

Minimum attendance of 80% of the classes is required, with functioning camera and microphone to pass the course. Apart from the assignments and attendance, you have two exams at the end of the course (theory exam and translation exam).

The course has 11 classes. Each class focuses on a different aspect of translation and its procedure - text analysis, documentation, cultural references, etc.

Before each class, you are given reading materials which can consist of book chapters and/or academic articles. Before the class, you are required to hand in assignments (normally one theory assignment based on your reading and one translation). In order to pass the course, you are required to hand in and pass all the assignments, and attend at least 80% of the classes making active participation.
