Welcome to the Master's Programme in Business Studies with an International Focus at Dalarna University
The one-year Master's Programme in Business Studies offers you theoretical classes with practical exercises based on the needs of local and international companies.
It is a campus-based full-time study programme located at the Campus Borlänge.
Programme Structure
The programme’s first semester includes three research-related courses.
The first two are running parallel in 50% study-rate, for the period of 10 weeks (week 36 - 45).
Corporate Responsibility in an International Perspective (FÖ3042)
In this course, the emergence of the key concepts and different schools of thought within and related to the field of CSR are elaborated. More specifically, the course examines further how these relate to the fields of accounting and control, marketing and human resource management. Further, an analysis is conducted of the approach to CSR that an organization has.
In this course, the key concepts and schools in the field of Knowledge Management are presented and elaborated. These schools of thought will be applied to present problem areas concerning the transfer of knowledge which is an important issue for all three specializations. During the course, the use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) in Knowledge Management, Communities of Practice, and social-cultural issues related to managing and sharing knowledge are also elaborated.
After these two courses students choose one of these two specialization courses (100% study rate in weeks 46 - 03):
- International Business and Marketing (FÖ3036)
- Studies of International Human Resource Management (FÖ3040)
In preparation for the upcoming thesis project, students will during the spring term take a course Research Design, Science Theory and Methods (FÖ3043) (100% study-rate, weeks 4 - 13) where the focus will be on research design and different methods of data collection and analysis. The other part of this course is devoted to preparing a research proposal for the upcoming Master’s thesis.
The programme ends with the Master's Thesis in Business Administration (AFÖ26H) course (100% study-rate, weeks 14 -23) in which students independently get to work with frames of reference, data collection, processing and presentation of data.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Will the program only be held on site in Borlänge, or will it be possible to complete the education remotely?
The program is designed as a campus-based program, and remote completion is not possible.
- How often are the classes in Borlänge?
Class frequency varies depending on the specific course. During the initial phase (September/October), when two courses run concurrently, classes may occur 3-4 days per week in Borlänge. Subsequently, during elective courses, this may reduce to 1-2 days per week. Towards the end of the program, during the Master's thesis phase, there are four mandatory on-campus meetings within the final 10 weeks. Despite varying class frequencies, the program demands full-time commitment, requiring approximately 35-40 hours per week for studies, including readings, assignments, group work, and other out-of-class activities.
- When will the schedule be available?
The schedule for Period 1 (week 36 – 45) will be available in August.
- What course literature will we use?
The course literature for specific courses will be announced on the respective Canvas course rooms. Typically, the literature comprises journal articles accessible through the Dalarna University library databases, which are available for free. You will receive guidance on utilizing these library resources during the initial weeks of the program. For the first course, Knowledge Management, we will utilize the following course book: "Knowledge Management in Organizations: A critical introduction" by Donald Hislop et al. You have the option to either purchase the book or borrow it from the university library (a limited number of copies available).
