Welcome to "Japanese: Academic Writing (GJP2CG)" at Dalarna University

This course is offered online, via the Canvas learning platform and Zoom seminars (the link to the zoom room is in the course guideline module).

In this course, you will practice the basic skills of academic writing. It includes exercises in the wording of research questions, in planning and delimiting a study, in writing academic prose and in the use of the formalities of essay writing. The course concludes with a small-scale study on a topic related to Japan, which is presented in the form of a short essay written in English with a word count of between 2000 and 3000 words.

The course has 8 classes. As you can see in the Modules section, each class focuses on a different step required in writing an academic essay - choosing a topic, finding sources, writing an outline, etc. The final two classes are dedicated to carry out small-scale defense sessions, reading and commenting on a work by your peer.

Before each class, you are given reading materials which can consist of past theses, academic articles, book chapters etc. During the course, you are required to hand in assignments (some of them are graded and some of them are not, but they are all obligatory), an outline for your essay, hand in your draft and final essay, and participate in defense seesions. In order to pass the course, you are required to hand in and pass all the assignments, to pass the final defense presentation and attend at least 80% of the classes making active participation.
