Welcome to JP1049: Modern Japan – Culture and Society!
In this course, you will develop knowledge about various aspects of contemporary
Japanese culture and society; including social life, the covered topics include nature,
geography, history, economy, society, government and diplomacy, business,
education, traditional and modern arts, and language. You will discuss different
perspectives found in texts and other sources about Japan and argue for your own
opinions regarding these topics. You will also write a short academic paper about a
topic of your interest regarding modern Japanese culture.

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
 - display basic knowledge about and explain some aspects of contemporary
Japanese culture and society
- discuss different perspectives found in writings about Japan and defend their
own opinions about the topics presented in the texts.
- demonstrate basic academic writing ability.

Forms of study
The course will be taught in English. Previous knowledge of Japanese will be helpful,
but is not required. Students are expected to have done all the assigned reading
before the seminar and be ready to ask questions and be ready to discuss the topics.
Teaching takes the form of lectures, group discussions, and various online activities.

Examination
The grade for this course is determined based on class performance, 3 exams
(online/take-home), a final paper and the oral presentation of the final paper.

Seminar Schedule VT24

Online seminars will be held on Wednesdays @10:00-11:30 in weeks 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 15, 17, 19, and 22*.

*The last seminar (student presentation) in week 22 may be longer [possible an afternoon session as well] depending on the number of students presenting.
