Course syllabus

Welcome to GJP23W--Japanese IV: Introduction to Linguistics!

In this course, some of the key concepts of phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, which are used to describe the Japanese language, are studied. The students also reflect oon how such knowledge is obtained through the study of language acquisition and historical linguistics. In addition, related areas  as psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, and the writing systems, are discussed.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

  • explain the fundamental nature of the sound structure, the word structure, grammatical structure, and dialectal variations of the Japanese language
  • analyze the typological characteristics of the Japanese language using theoretical concepts in an appropriate way
  • utilize linguistic knowledge to improve their writing, reading and oral skills in Japanese.

Assessment

In order to pass the course, students must actively take part in class activities and group discussions, complete written assignments and oral presentations and pass a written examination.

Seminar Schedule VT24

Online seminars will be held on Mondays @10:00-11:30 in weeks 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 15*, 16, 17, 19 and 20.

*The 10th seminar (student presentation) in week 15 may be longer [possible an afternoon session as well] depending on the number of students presenting.

The online registration for VT24 will be open from the 1st of January until the 14th of January 2024, and one cannot be registered after that.
