Structure Course Material in Modules

To build a structure in our course, you use modules. In each module, you can organise, for example, pages, assignments, and discussion forums in the order in which students must complete them. You can also group content in levels for a better structure.

We recommend that you always start on the module page when creating new material. This way you can be sure that the material in your course is clearly structured for students.

Modules are useful in several ways:

  • They create a clear structure for the course so that students can find the right material at the right time.
  • They create a path through the course. When students use the material, a "Next" button at the bottom takes them to the next part of the module.
  • They also give you a clear overview so that you know which material has been published or not.
  • In modules, you can group material that will be available at a later date.

1.Go to Modules and click on Add Module at the top right.
2. Write a name for the module that describes the content and which week/the date that students are supposed to work with it: for example, "week 11. Introduction to Qualitative Interviewing”.

3. Click on Add Module

IMPORTANT: Remember to publish your module!

Publish the Module and Its Content

The green icon indicates that the module is published. It is important that you remember to publish the module when it is time for students to access it. Unpublished modules are not visible to your students even if there is material in the module that has already been published. If you have a published module with some material that is unpublished, then students will only see the published material.

You can choose a time setting so that the module is published on a set day and at a set time. Click on the three dots at the far right and choose Edit.

Add Material to a Module

Modules is a flexible tool for presenting course content. It is not a storage place; rather, it is a way to structure and display content. The material can be found under the course menu's folders for Pages, Files, Assignments and so on

A module can contain:

  • text headings (=non-clickable subheadings)
  • pages
  • assignments
  • quizzes
  • discussion forum
  • links
  • files

To add material to a module, you need to do the following:

Markerat plustecken i modulens huvud

  • Click on the plus sign in the same row as your module: see the screenshot.
  • Select the type of material you want to add. You can add existing material, upload files, or create new material directly from the module tool.
  • When you create something new from the module tool, you can think of it as the framework for the course. Add the pages, assignments, discussions, and whatever else you need to the course. Publish them when you have filled them with content.

If you remove material from a module, for example an assignment, then you have only deleted the link. Your assignment remains in the course menu Assignments, and you need to delete it there as well, otherwise it may still appear to the students in their To do list or in the Kursöversikten.

Change the Name or Order of Modules

1. Click on the three dot to the right and choose Edit if you need to change the name or the time setting. Here you an also find settings to make parts of the module obligatory ot to make it so that students must complete another module before they can complete the next.
2. All modules and module content have a symbol with eight dots in front of them/it. Hold and click to move something higher up or lower down the list.

Tip: To close the module so all you see is its heading, click on the small arrow in front of the module name. This is a good way to gain an overview of a course that has a lot of content. This setting affects only what you see. Your students will still see a list of all content.
