Assignments
Assignments can be used so that students can submit work to teachers. Here you can find information about how to create an assignment and change settings.
Create Assignment
You can create an assignment directly in a module or below Assignments in the course menu. However, we recommend that you create an assignment in a module because then it is clear where it will be visible to students.
To create the task in a module, click on the plus sign in the title of the module.
- Select Assignment
- Select New assignment (or choose from already created assignments in the list).
- Type a suitable name for the new assignment.
- Click Add item.
Edit Assignment
To be able to edit and change settings, click on the name of the assignment in the module or below Assignments in the course menu.
- Click on Edit to write the instructions for the assignments and choose the settings you want.
- To create an assessment rubric for the assignment, click on Rubrics.
Edit Assignment Instructions
Describe the assignment and provide the information and instructions that students need to complete an assignment. Collect all materials and links for the assignment here as this makes it easier for students to locate information, links, literature, films, etc.
Settings
Keep in mind that students may understand the setting of points in different ways. Explain how they are to interpret points on assignments and also explain that examiners set grades in Ladok, not Canvas.
With Display grade as, different grading scales can be used. Even if Points is not selected, it can be useful to write these points as Canvas uses this for calculations. This means, for example, that an assignment marked complete gets 1 and an incomplete assignment gets 0, but the student sees Complete or Incomplete.
If you choose a letter grade, the option Manage All Grading Schemes allows you to choose an assessment scale in the course room or one shared at the University.
The submission type setting is easy to miss. If students are to be able to submit work in the Assignment function, then you need to select the option Online.
In addition, the following options are available:
- If Text entry is selected, students can write directly in a text editor in the assignment.
- If Website URL or Media Recordings is selected, students can submit the assignment with a link or video/audio file.
- If Student Annotation is selected, students can colour mark, circle, and comment on the uploaded document.
- If File Uploads is selected, students can upload a file from their computer. You can limit which file types students can upload. Write file extensions, without a dot, separated by commas (for example docx, pdf).
The image above shows examples of other settings. Here is some information about these.
- Submission attempts: By default, students can submit work several times. This can be good if, for example, they have to make changes. You can, however, limit the number of times they can submit a piece of work.
- Plagiarism review: If you want to check students’ work using Urkund/Ouriginal, you can activate it here. The assignment will be sent automatically in to check for plagiarism, and the report becomes visible in Grades and SpeedGrader. The function Show report to students is disabled. Let it remain on Never .
To read more about how Urkund/Ouriginal work in Canvas, see the Ouriginal help page [link to an external site] Links to an external site. or the Turnitin information page [link to an external site]. Links to an external site. - Group assignment: When someone in a group is to submit for the whole group, this is activated. To make different assessments for individuals in the group, you need to activate Assess each student individually. Otherwise, everyone in the group gets the same grade.
- Peer reviews: If students are to give a peer review, this is activated here. Peer reviews cannot be combined with group assignments.
- Anonymous grading: Hides students' names
- Assign to is by default set to Everyone, which means all students in the course. Teachers also see the assignment, regardless of the setting. If a certain student or section is to do the assignment, All is unchecked and the correct recipient is selected instead.
- Due: Select the date and time when the assignment must be submitted by. Students see this in both the calendar and the To do sidebar in the Course overview and on the home page. If a student submits after the specified time, it is marked as a late submission.
- Available from: If a time is entered here, students cannot see the content of the assignment until the specified time.
- Until: If a time is entered here, students cannot submit the assignment after the specified time.
- +Assign to can be used if you want to give certain students or sections a different submission time. If you select one or more to have an alternative submission time, the assignment for the others will change to Everyone else if it was set to All.
Use Students’ view to see how the assignment looks from the students’ perspective. If it is not visible, it is because it has yet to be published.
